Drinking Water
Every day, we provide eight million gallons of water to over 60,000 residents and businesses in the City of Harrisburg; parts of Penbrook Borough; and Susquehanna, Swatara, and Lower Paxton townships. Capital Region Water employees work hard, day in and day out, to ensure that the best quality water is available to you every time you turn on the faucet.
The DeHart Reservoir
Capital Region Water gets its drinking water from the DeHart Reservoir, a remote, secure, and pristine reservoir located in forested hills about 20 miles north of Harrisburg.
The DeHart Reservoir provides some of the highest quality drinking water in the United States. Our Water Services Center is staffed 24 hours a day to treat, test, and produce over seven million gallons of safe drinking water every day.
We also maintain three storage reservoirs (located in Reservoir Park) and over 200 miles of water mains to deliver safe drinking water to every home and business in our service area.
Capital Region Water has received both the 20-year Director’s Award and the President’s Award from the Partnership for Safe Drinking Water for exceeding all state and federal drinking water standards.
Asset Management
Capital Region Water protects homes and businesses by providing water to and maintaining 1,700 fire hydrants. Each year, a hydrant flushing is done. This is a critical annual program to maintain high quality drinking water. Annual flushing removes buildup in fire hydrants and water mains and brings fresh water into pipes that are used infrequently.
Every fire hydrant is also inspected for proper operation to ensure reliable use for fire protection. Capital Region Water quickly repairs any issues with fire hydrants to keep them in service.
