AWTF Energy Recovery Improvements
Background:
Methane produced in CRW’s AWTF anaerobic digestion process is utilized as fuel for boilers and two 400-HP enginators that generate electricity sold to the grid. The boilers and enginators heat the anaerobic digesters and buildings on the AWTF campus. The combined heat and power system was installed in 1984 and has exceeded its useful life. Maintenance and parts have become increasingly problematic. Arcadis completed an evaluation that included process recommendations.
Project Purpose:
Make process improvements to condition digester gas, retire the existing enginators and provide backup power generation for the AWTF.
Project Summary:
The project will include enhanced thickening of Waste Activated Sludge (WAS), alkaline thermal hydrolysis (of thickened WAS), biogas compression and conditioning to pipeline quality, receiving and equalization facilities for high-strength waste, and on-site emergency power generation. The project will include all associated facilities site/yard piping, architectural, structural, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and instrumentation and controls.
The project will be financed from PENNVEST(1% APR Loan)
